AI Business Engineer
Turn business problems into working AI systems, and working AI systems into measured outcomes. ABE is bostoncyberx's name for the Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) role.
About the role
The AI Business Engineer is the role this firm is built around: part consultant, part opportunity identifier, part builder. You sit with a client's leadership team in the morning, map a use case to a measurable outcome, and by the afternoon you are prototyping the agentic workflow that delivers it. You speak P&L and Python in the same meeting.
What this title means
One of the fastest growing roles in the AI industry is the Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), a term used by Palantir, Anthropic, OpenAI and others. So what is the difference between an FDE and a bcx AI Business Engineer (ABE)?
The title should name the outcome you own, not where you sit. FDE describes a staffing pattern: an engineer sent into the account. This role owns a number. You find the use case that pays, build the system, and show the result to the board.
The buyer is the executive, not the engineering org. You run discovery with a CFO in the morning and a build session in the afternoon. FDE reads as an on-site engineer. Business Engineer says the commercial conversation is the job, not a side skill.
bcx is not embedding a product team in a customer. Palantir, OpenAI, and Anthropic use FDE to land their own platform. We sit in the client's P&L, build on what they already have, and stay accountable for the outcome. The name should say that.
